Haven't seen this production, but when you said that it was written in the program that the purpose was to strip away anything that would distract from the text (by which, I presume the director meant strip away sets, costumes, and action and just focus on the words), I got so angry. I am a former middle school English teacher, and I taught Romeo and Juliet to my students. One of the struggles that we English teachers have is that Shakespeare was intended to be preformed, not read. There aren't really many stage directions, just mostly actors' lines, and for young people studying the play today, who are so far removed from the social norms and vernacular of Shakespeare's time, it's hard to understand the story from just the words. I'd say most of today's audiences need talented actors and production teams to create and tell the story through not only the words they say, but their costumes, sets, and you know, actual acting. Why not just have actors sit in a circle and read the words, readers theater-style, if they're not going to, you know, put on a play?

I loved this last year at the Fringe and I'm excited to see it in London next week!

Still a Sarah fan. Have most of her albums and saw her twice in concert. So amazing. Really sad for the reviews about her Norma. I was lucky to see the 2017 Revival with Glenn Close..... SPECTACULAR!!! Can't wait for the transfer of the recent London production going to Broadway with Nicole Scherzinger!!!

Saw this at Home in Manchester last October and was laughing throughout. Nailed it as a description with it being in the style of Victoria Wood, the cadence of the dialogue and the comic spacing was excellent. Glad to see the majority of the company are carrying on the chemistry between the leads was so key to the story and I really felt for the push/pull of the friendship choices they were making. The songs were incredibly catchy and I was humming the main tune for months afterwards.

My belief is do the play as intended, not make some BS political statement for your own self benefit and to reflect some ill-guided perception of today's political environment. "Cis-male" does not need to be thrown at people's faces. Respect the play and that's it. For example, can Hamlet be played by a non-white person? Perhaps. But it is not what the author intended. Was Richard III in the play disabled? Yes. Then play it as such.

Sarah Brightman has been out of the show for two weeks now .. she pulled her calf muscle… which makes moving on the stairs impossible. The show has cut back performances as it isn’t selling… it’s cut Tuesday and Sunday performances. The show has been playing to around 500 a night in a 1600 seat theatre. The Sydney season is at the Sydney Opera House which has underwritten the show. There was another actress who was approached and was interested… Toni Collette. She would have sold tickets !

This is not a cut on you being British, but I feel if you were American, you would get it more. It’s a classic here and many of us read this book in school. I don’t feel it would do well in the West End. I do respect your opinions not knowing or appreciating the way we feel about it here in the US as growing up here is a bit different.

The way things are heading these blab-fests, sorry, reviews, will end up being longer than the show itself. Never mind the length, feel the excitement.

Hi Mickey, I saw Sunset Boulevard last Sunday. Sarah Brightman was meant to be performing and I was sad to hear when I arrived that she had hurt her leg and wasnt able to perform. That said, Silvie Paladino did a spectacular job of the role of Norma Desmond. I am very impressed with the performance and it was easily the best musical I had ever seen. Whilst I expected Brightman to perform and it was the reason I purchased the tickets, I must say that I can't imagaine Paladino performing it better.

Booked for August during a 13 show stay in London and am looking forward to it

as someone who's read the book and seen the movie, i agree with a lot of this. the 'tell not show' stuff was driving me insane, as was the pointlessness of some of the songs (especially because most of the songs weren't great). a piece of theater should work regardless of familiarity with the source material (although, obviously, that can inform someone's relation to the piece).

I loved your review! I haven’t seen Cabaret live ever, but honestly got very intrigued after watching the Tony’s. Very interesting! Huuuge Chicago fan (I’ve seen it on Broadway and it’s something else) that’s why I think I’ll like this one too!

I saw it early in previews. It was fun, but inconsequential. I haven’t thought about it once since that night. It felt more like an episode of some anarchic 80s Britcom than a real musical.

This is my absolute favourite thing in the west end right now. I followed it from Edi and it deserves every success it’s getting. The characters feel so real and never before have I seen so much of myself in characters on a stage. Imo kathy and stella is an absolute must-see!!

I wish Maria and Lindsay would’ve won for Merrily but so excited for the pro shot coming!

Went to the 2nd preview (the night after your live show) and I had a absolutely blast. The performances from all the cast were amazing (you really believe in Kathy & Stella friendship and you root for them throughout, I totally agree with your thoughts on Imelda performance in the 2nd act she was so good). I was sat in the stalls near the entrance door which is used by one of the characters in the 2nd act (which caused me to jump out of my skin 😆). The songs are catchy. If you enjoyed Only Murders in the Building then you will enjoy this show. Great fun night out at the theatre. Thanks for the recommendation (went to it based on your previous review of the show).

6:30 "none" is a singular pronoun, so even though it sounds weird, "none of my closest friends even has hands" is technically proper grammar. I'm not excusing the rest of Mean Girls but that one line, while super awkward, is technically right (and also probably serves to show how socially awkward Cady is, that she speaks in a way that's technically correct but no other person would naturally speak that way)

I’ll definitely check it out on my current visit to London. Interesting you mention comedy book vs lyrics: I found Tina Fey’s book had some absolute zingers today (as did the direction and acting) but I don’t recall laughing at any of the lyrics... Anyway I can’t wait for your review of Mean Girls once it opens properly next week 👍

Ok genuine question here, has Sarah actually been on at all lately? It seems those of us who've been in the last couple of weeks have all seen Silvie. Silvie is amazing so I'm not complaining, I'm just curious.

When I go to NYC to see shows, it's hard to balance seeing what you find most interesting vs. shows that may close or not tour. I'm happy the awards were more spread out among shows this year. It is too bad for Water for Elephants though, I really enjoyed that one. I don't typically see plays but I'll definitely see Stereophonic, though it sounds like a play/musical hybrid and I'm happy to see it got extended

Was thinking about seeing Two Strangers while in my trip from the states, saw this video and it jumped to my top two. Saw it a bit over a week ago (yay TodayTix rush) and can’t get the songs out of my head.

Regardless of how good Silvie Paladino may be in the role, she is seen as the "stand in" not the main attraction and that does not appeal to those forking out for very expensive tickets. Your friends will ask what you thought of Sarah Brightman and it would be a bit embarrassing to say you only saw the back up.

I managed to see the show; And while I adore Sarah Brightman, this was not a role suited to her voice unfortunately... I still have to applaud the supporting cast, set design and choreography! Absolutely stunning work!

Ticket prices are very high , especially in the current economic climate, but you also need to consider that this is not really a “musical”, it’s a production by Australia’s premier opera company and is priced accordingly. We’re paying opera prices, not theatre prices. The Sydney production will be at the Opera House in the Opera Theatre not a defence of the price, but an explanation And I’m looking forward to going and glad to hear the show’s visuals are such a large component. Lloyd Webber is as much about spectacle as the music, and the Opera House is equally grand. Frankly I was disappointed when we got the revamped, tour-friendly Phantom with its less impressive sets and effects.
